Cultural impact of poker

There is something about poker that screams intelligence, suave players and tricky moves. Anyone who’s any good, particularly on the world tournament scale, must have something about them that’s cool.

Where does this impression come from? Over the past 40 years, poker has been referenced by bands and artists across the musical genres, has been used as a plot device in films ranging from Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman to Casino Royale with the newest incarnation of James Bond.

Poker is cool - think of Motorhead’s Ace of Spades, Lady Gaga’s Pokerface, movies like Casino, Maverick and Ocean’s Eleven. All of these songs, films and cultural references are steeped in cool pop culture, it’s no wonder that it has become a game steeped in legend and mystique. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bESGLojNYSo

However, there are many top level poker players who presumably aren’t particularly interested in winning the money. A list actors (and already extremely well off) like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Tobey Maguire are highly accomplished players who play in championship poker regularly. The money can’t be the overwhelming factor contributing to their interest in the sport, it’s far more likely to show that the mental agility and cool headedness needed is what drives these Hollywood elite to play poker.
