Ridley Scott Directed Alien Prequel To Star The Space Jockey, Giger Working On New Designs

I never geek out over upcoming films. Never. But I am geeking the fuck out about Prometheus, Ridley Scott's not-quite-an-Alien-prequel-Alien-prequel, especially since I just heard that H. R. Giger's working on it too.

From Cinema Spy:

Ridley Scott’s prequel to his 1979 science fiction-horror classic Alien is one of those grail projects that everyone is chomping at the bit to learn more about. Thus far, however, details about Prometheus have remained scarce—particularly with respect to the Aliens and their role in the film. Given the wide reports that Scott plans to make the film a kind of stand-alone science fiction story not wholly dependent upon the Aliens for its message, some concern has emerged among fans that they might not get to see enough of their beloved acid-bleeding xenomorphs (yes, we count ourselves among you).

The folks over at Latino Review ferreted out a claim by a poster over at Star Seekerwho alleges to have spoken to someone working on the set of Prometheus. The individual in question has revealed a few more details suggesting the Aliens’ role in the movie is more prominent than Scott has led us to believe (not a surprise to us, frankly). Given the anonymous source of this new information, however, it’s probably best to take the below with a serious grain of salt. Here’s the report [spelling and grammar corrected for readability]:

I was speaking with a guy who is working on the set of Prometheus and he showed me some pictures and told me about the storyline. The space jockey that you see in alien who has had his chest busted open is the guy who engineers the aliens. He sends the aliens to a planet that he wants to take over. The aliens kill the locals and he flies in and pillages the land of its resources. It seems as though he is responsible for the aliens creation, I’m guessing that he is some kind of super scientist.

The engineer is played by some huge guy who is 8ft tall. He appears even bigger in the space jockey scene from Alien as he is wearing a space suit. He appears to have died in a seat that looks like it is some sort of weapon control, this is in fact the navigation system that the space ship uses to open worm holes and plot its course. Perhaps the aliens revolted and, knowing that he has been impregnated, he is desperately trying to return home to have the alien extricated?

He showed me some pictures from the set. There is a huge silver bust of the engineers head, it is approximately 15m high. It appears that the engineer is sort of leader of a civilisation and there is a cult around his personality and his alien creations, this is probably due to the fact that he has mastered the technology that continues to provide the resource requirements of his home world. I also saw a picture of the actor who plays the engineer in what appeared to be some sort of cryo-chamber.

Note the spelling of the word “civilisation” above. This is the British spelling. Given that we know the film is shooting at Pinewood Studios in England, this might lend some additional credibility to the source, but again there’s no way to verify.

If true, however, we like what we’re hearing with respect to the Aliens and their role in the storyline. The remark about “send[ing] the aliens to a planet that he wants to take over…” could also be the ‘terraforming technique’ we read about previously.

This would expand the universe, as Scott alluded he would do, yet at the same time give the Aliens a crucial role.

Prometheus stars Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Rafe Spall and Guy Pearce. The film is scheduled for release on June 8, 2012.
