I was feeling good today. Music was inspiring me. AWK and Mef all day. I felt amazing. Blessed, fresh, like a million bucks. Put on my Christmas jacket and my ole Don Chucks. Man, they only fucked around and opened a bar around the corner from my yard. Two years I’ve been here, and no bar. Just me, my girl and a corner shop. Now they’re shutting the trains off, killing off the foot traffic and my Turkish friends gotta downsize. The cheeky young scamp Gerkhan, who regaled me with tales of “riding horses with a shotty merking wolves” back in the old country as a was a teenager is gonna have to find a new hustle.

But we, we in our ever-evolving Industrial Estate next to the Mayan Apocalypse Olympic Park have a bar now. Hot dog! The Hackney Pearl. It sure is a nice place too. Science lab decor, London brewed beer and big-ass capers. They had a party to celebrate tonight. Free bar, dammit! If I had a laptop I’d be doing my emails in there in the mornings. My girl’s right, I need to get out of the house more. The air gives me a feeling…

Can you believe it took John Hughes dying to get me to make another ATD mixtape?

Well you shouldn’t. I was working on one when I heard the sad news. It was around midnight. My head was filled with all that brilliant John Hughes music, and I was inspired to make a bootleg. Then I did another. By 6 in the morning I realised I was making a mixtape. And here it is.

All of the music in this tape started life riding the back of something from a John Hughes movie. Apart from one beautiful, glaring mistake. A fabulous no-prize goes to the genius who can work out which one that is.

So, yeah. I hope you enjoy this. It’s the first genuine OG ATD tape I’ve done in years. I missed this process – its lunatic, maddening, and exciting. Late nights melt into early mornings hunched over the keyboard, banging out rhythms over crudely chopped samples. My neck aches, and my  eyeballs bulge, and I am glad I don’t smoke these days.

That’s right. So I’d like to thank Zef for taking my sleeve and making it look dirty, my girl for giving me the room to do it, and of course, John Hughes, for the inspiration.

So, Method Man heard about Nas getting hit with a $Stupid Bux a month child support trap. And a nerve was struck.

You tryin’ to maintain your lifestyle! The court system is geared more towards the women than the men… even father’s day… what them kids don’t understand is, that air they’re breathing, the lights, the cable, the mortgage, all that fall on daddy’s shoulders! Not to mention that he gotta pay this stinkin’ ass bitch that he don’t even fuck with no more to look good for some other nigga. That shit is ridiculous man. And any chick that’s doing that shit you dead fuckin’ wrong… ‘can’t put a price on what I do,’ yes you can motherfucker, they call it maid service.”

(He took that last bit back afterwards.)

For the record, Kelis will actually be getting $30,741 (£18,620) a month in spousal support and $9,027 (£5,470) a month to raise their son. Still. DAMN Nas.
