Plies Lies?

Inspired by recent Smoking Gun Dot Com exposes on Akon and Rick Ross, rap website HipHopDX has decided to do a bit of journalism, and has looked into the criminal past of “goon” rapper Plies, who has claimed on record he’s been to jail and suchlike.
Turns out dude hasn’t actually been to jail, and, in fact, didn’t get arrested until he was 29! Whoo!
HipHopDX has obtained documentation from the state of Florida that lists the “definition of real” rapper’s first real run-in with the law to have not taken place until two years ago, on April 12, 2006, when Plies - real name Algernod Lanier Washington, born May 22, 1976 - would have been on the eve of his 30th birthday and just beginning his ascension to his current status of gold-certified rap star.
Can’t see too many people giving a fuck about this one, however. Check the story out here.

As a Plies fan I have personally never heard him claim to have been in prison. These websites are reaching now. I think you’ll find that neither Jay-Z nor Biggie had criminal records before releasing their first records.

For real. With Plies though, he goes conceptual on every song, he doesn’t have many songs about nothing, so you hear a lot of stories and you separate what you’re supposed to be hearing as Plies and the stuff you’re not supposed to hear as Plies.
I might be reading too much into it but knowing his music I never thought “This guy’s been in prison” he’s actually quite a self-deprecating rapper.

I agree.
Noone thought Johnny Cash shot a man in Reno, right?
I HAVE read Plies going on and on ininterviews about how street he is though.

Oh he’s street. The music is street no question but it’s not like with say Rick Ross or Akon where you could argue that the criminality is glamorised.

Not related at all, but a bit of disgusting music news is to be found in today’s Wall Street Journal (article linked from this Gawker post):

Gum grosses me out to begin with, and Chris Brown bothers me (could be his really lame Super Sweet 16 episode), so this is just a disgustication clusterfuck.

Jermain Dupri set up a label deal with TAG bodyspray that will sign artists to deals based around TAG advertising and branding.
These are dark days and times.

Jermain Dupri is one of the world’s biggest whores. Once again using My Super Sweet 16 as a reference point, the man has appeared in about half the episodes. In one, he jumps into a car with the girl, already holding a mic. She didn’t know him until he introduced himself and she still had a ‘what the fuck is this dude doing in my limo’ look until he got out.
I think the particular problem with the Chris Brown thing is that the song was released and charted before they announced ‘oh yeah, it’s all a marketing gimmick.’ If that’s clear from the start (there was a Justin Timberlake-McDonalds collaboration back in 2004), it’s a whole other beast. Still bad, just not as conniving.

Creepy, yes. But also an amazing way to see just how far down some people will go for a bit of cash. (Celebrity guests have included Pharell, Rhianna, Kanye, G-Unit (no 50, though), and some dude named Pitbull.)

BEING A REAL PLIES FAN I DON’T REALLY SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. I NEVER REALLY HEARD PLIES SAY HE WENT TO JAIL MAYBE HE SPEAKS ON THINGS HE’S SEEN. IN REALITY THOSE ARE JUST LYRICS EVERY SONG A RAPPER MAKES ISN’T THERE LIFE.LOOK AT LIL WAYNE THE THINGS HE RAP ABOUT I’M SURE ITS NOT ALL HIS LIFE. BESIDES THAT WHOSE TO SAY HE DIDN’T DO THE THINGS HE RAPS ABOUT SOME PEOPLE ARE LUCKIER THAN OTHERS TO NOT GET CAUGHT HE WAS BLESSED.SO GET OFF HIS BACK.
